The Nigerian elections in 2023, according to Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, “shattered his confidence.”
Soyinka said that the elections were “not exactly the most edifying exercise that we’ve gone through,” adding that he had been out of the country for several months.
He remarked to Channels TV on Monday, April 3, “I came here for the World Poetry Day, and instantly, I was inundated by the most horrible storylines both before and after the elections.”
Since then, I’ve also read articles; for the first time in months, I’ve seen Nigerian newspapers, and I didn’t like what I read at all.
Even the minimal discipline that we have come to expect from seasoned politicians has been utterly abandoned, and my faith in them has completely fallen down.
He declared that the current mold will be destroyed.
He said that there were indications that there would be fierce opposition to changing that mold. Elections should feature fierce competition. But I still firmly believe in what I refer to as the Fashola Dictum, which was first said by the late Babatunde Fashola, the former governor of Lagos.
These ought to be another another manifestation of humanity’s holiday joy, but this was anything but, he remarked.
