When followers of traditional religions entered a mosque in Ile-Ife, Osun state, and attacked some Muslims who were praying, at least six people were reportedly hurt.
On Thursday, March 30, at 4 p.m., the Muslims were inside the mosque for the 4 p.m. prayer when the traditionalists invaded the mosque while they were doing the Oro rite.
The Oro devotees had warned citizens to avoid certain localities on Wednesday, March 29, by announcing that the Oro ritual will be performed in those locations between 2pm and 7pm.
The Muslims carried on as usual that day, but about 4 pm, worshippers from the Oro tribe broke into the mosque in Idi-Omo, Ilare, to scatter those who were doing ablution inside the mosque’s surrounding fence.
According to reports, they arrived carrying canes and began whipping Muslims who were completing ablution.
Alhaji Abdullateef Adesiyan, the imam, was struck with a cane.
The traditionalists fled as a result of the Muslims in the mosque calling for assistance and other Muslims forming a group.
Then, the hurt Muslims were transferred to a hospital for care.
Officers from the police department arrived in the area right away to begin an investigation.
Following the incident, Muslims in Ile-Ife, Osun State, organized a protest on Friday, March 31.
The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, issued a call for calm and order in response to the attack.
On Friday, Mr. Adeyeye delivered the speech via his deputy, Obalufe of Ifeland, Idowu Adediwura.
He asserted that there was no justification for his home to be in upheaval as the royal father of Christians, Muslims, and traditionalists as well as a global leader who promoted peaceful cooperation.
