A total of 80 Point of Sales (PoS) agents have been detained in Ondo state by agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), who are thought to be purchasing and selling money to members of the public with higher interest.
According to Vanguard, the exercise was conducted over the weekend in Akure, the state capital.
According to reports, the officials visited the state’s Akure South and Akure North council areas, where the agents were detained for charging residents more for their naira.
Many POS agents left their kiosks after the development for fear of being arrested.
Some PoS agents have been purchasing cash from banks for several weeks and selling it to customers at exorbitant prices.
According to a witness, the commission’s agents invaded Akure’s well-known Oja-Oba market along Oba Adesida road and detained over 80 agents.
He stated, “In the Oja Oba region, EFCC agents have detained about 80 PoS attendants. They’ll ask them to explain where they get their money from, how much they charge clients, and to lead them to the person who provided them the money.
“Several PoS employees who were aware of the information in advance left their stands and sprinted away.
Another witness reported that a woman approached a stand where an agent was serving customers and inquired about the agent’s fee for handling each thousand Naira.
“At the moment the deal was completed, I observed the woman motioning to a group of men, and that is how I recognized them as EFCC agents as they escorted the agent away.
“Yet, it is horrible how PoS suppliers take advantage of the general population because they believe that since banks are unhelpful, the public has no other choice.
