Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Labour Party due to actions taken by some PDP politicians to guarantee that power stayed in the north, according to Rivers State Governor Chief Nyesom Wike.
According to a statement by the governor’s press secretary, Kelvin Ebiri, Wike made a speech on Thursday while hosting the National Executive Committee of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Worldwide at Government House in Port Harcourt.
He declared that he was a strong supporter of a Southern president and gave the example of Obi’s decision to quit the party after Sule Lamido informed him (Obi) that the north would retain power in 2023.
Wike stated: “I believed that power had to arrive down south. I provided Obi with all the necessary logistics when he arrived, including the stadium payment, transportation, and other support. Nevertheless, some other people applied, and I turned them down. By now, you should be too familiar with me.
Obi was jogging alongside us. When Obi departed, I knew. He was a man of principles, and he declared that individuals should always speak the truth. He traveled to Jigawa, a town more than four or five hours’ journey from Dutse, the country’s capital, to see Sule Lamido.
“You you aware of what he told Obi? He did not inform him that I have chosen someone and you arrived late. He predicted that the next president would come from the north. Obi did so, asking why the other person was wasting time. Ask him how he quit the PDP; that’s how.
“And at the convention center, I saw that. Your sons were the ones that undermined me in a matter of minutes after realizing I was going to win. Ok, no issue, I replied.
But I persisted in saying, “If you have taken the chairmanship, you can’t take it again if the presidential candidate has been taken. Give us back the chairman, and I still stand by that, and if you don’t do that, whatever you see you take.”
Nonetheless, Igbos have long aspired to produce the president of Nigeria, and they regarded the most recent presidential election as an opportunity to secure it, according to Dr. Peter Anele, Deputy National Legal Adviser of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Worldwide.
