The start of the 2023 national housing and population census, which was originally scheduled for March 29, is likely to be impacted by the Independent National Electoral Commission’s decision to postpone the governorship and state assembly elections, according to National Population Commission Chairman Nasir Kwarra.
The chairman revealed this to Ms. Ulla Mueller, the UN Population Fund’s resident representative, at a meeting they had in Abuja.
The gubernatorial and state assembly elections, which were initially slated to take place on March 11, were postponed by one week, to March 18, according to an INEC announcement made late on Wednesday.
As a result, the NPC chairman declared that since no definite date had been set for the start of the national census, he would consult with the President, Major General Muhammadu Buahri (ret.).
The Resident Representative promised that the UNFPA will assist in making the exercise a success on her part.
The census would also gain credibility, she added, if a post-enumeration survey were conducted. She also emphasized the importance of the exercise for achieving the sustainable development goal.
The UNFPA sent sixteen high-capacity computers to the survey’s use as a sign of support for the post-enumeration survey.
